The 64 Gates & 6 Lines

Gates are the 64 archetypal energies of the Human Design Bodygraph, drawn directly from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Each gate carries a specific theme, sits within a particular Center, and expresses through one of six lines, creating the rich texture of your unique design.

| What Are Gates?

In the Human Design Bodygraph, there are 64 gates, each one corresponding to one of the 64 hexagrams of the ancient Chinese I Ching (Book of Changes). These gates are positioned around the Bodygraph mandala and distributed across the nine Centers: Head, Ajna, Throat, G Center, Heart/Will, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, and Root.

Each gate represents an archetypal energy or theme. When a gate is activated in your chart (colored in red, black, or both), you have consistent access to that particular frequency. Gates are activated by the positions of the planets at the time of your birth and approximately 88 days before your birth.

Every gate has a partner gate at the other end of a channel. When both gates of a channel are activated, the full channel is defined, creating a reliable energy flow between two Centers. A single activated gate without its partner is called a "hanging gate." You carry that energy consistently but seek its completion through others.

The gate number in your chart tells you what energy is present. The line number tells you how that energy expresses. Together, the gate and line (for example, Gate 13.4) give a precise description of the archetypal theme and the specific way it plays out in your life.

| The 6 Lines

Each of the 64 gates has 6 lines, creating 384 possible gate-line positions (64 × 6). The line adds a specific flavor, role, or perspective to how a gate's energy is expressed. Lines 1-3 are considered the lower trigram (personal process), while lines 4-6 form the upper trigram (transpersonal process).

Your Profile in Human Design is built from two of these line themes, but every gate activation in your chart also carries a specific line, giving each gate its own unique expression.

1
The Investigator

Foundation, introspection, research. The 1st line needs to study and build a solid foundation of understanding before it feels secure. It digs deep, researches thoroughly, and needs to know the ground it stands on.

2
The Hermit

Natural talent, projection. The 2nd line has innate gifts that others notice, even when it does not see them in itself. It is called out from its natural, hermit-like state by those who recognize its talent.

3
The Martyr

Trial and error, discovery. The 3rd line learns through direct experience and bonds made and broken. It discovers what does not work, and this process of elimination is its greatest gift and source of wisdom.

4
The Opportunist

Externalization, friendship, networks. The 4th line shares its foundation through relationships and community. Opportunity comes through its network, the people it knows and the connections it has built over time.

5
The Heretic

Universalization, projection field. The 5th line is a practical problem-solver that others project their expectations onto. It carries a seductive quality and the potential to deliver universal solutions, but must manage the weight of projection.

6
The Role Model

Three-part life process. The 6th line lives in three phases: trial and error in the first ~30 years, then withdrawal and observation on the "roof," and finally stepping into role model wisdom after the Chiron return (~50). It embodies living example.

| Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find which gates are in my Human Design chart?

When you generate your Human Design chart (Bodygraph), the gates that are activated will appear as colored numbers along the channels. Gates colored in red are your Design (unconscious) activations, determined by the planetary positions about 88 days before birth. Gates colored in black are your Personality (conscious) activations, determined by planetary positions at birth. You can generate your free chart at Genetic Matrix to see all your activated gates.

What is the difference between a gate and a channel?

A gate is one half of a channel. Each channel connects two Centers and is formed by a pair of gates, one on each end. If you have one gate of a channel activated but not the other, you have a "hanging gate," a consistent energy that seeks its completion through others who carry the opposite gate. When both gates of a channel are activated, the full channel is defined and creates a consistent, reliable energy flow between those two Centers.

What do the 6 lines mean in Human Design?

Each of the 64 gates has 6 lines, creating 384 possible positions. The line adds a specific flavor to how a gate expresses. Line 1 (Investigator) needs to research and build foundations. Line 2 (Hermit) has natural talent that others notice. Line 3 (Martyr) learns through trial and error. Line 4 (Opportunist) shares through networks and friendships. Line 5 (Heretic) is a practical problem-solver with a projection field. Line 6 (Role Model) goes through a three-part life process, becoming a wise role model after their Chiron return around age 50.

Why are the gates connected to the I Ching?

The Human Design System synthesizes several ancient and modern systems, including the Chinese I Ching (Book of Changes). The 64 hexagrams of the I Ching correspond directly to the 64 gates in the Human Design Bodygraph. Each hexagram has 6 lines, which correspond to the 6 lines of each gate. Ra Uru Hu, who transmitted the Human Design System, mapped these 64 hexagrams onto the Bodygraph mandala, giving each gate its archetypal theme and positioning it within a specific Center.

Do I only express the gates that are activated in my chart?

You have consistent access to the gates that are activated in your chart. Gates in defined Centers operate consistently. Gates in undefined Centers do not operate consistently and can be amplified through interaction with others. You also experience other gate energies through people and transits. Understanding which gates are yours helps you distinguish between your fixed activations and what is being conditioned or amplified.
