The 36 Channels

Channels are the pathways that connect Centers and create definition in the Bodygraph. When both gates of a channel are activated, a fixed energy flow is established, shaping who you are and how your energy operates in the world.

| What Are Channels?

A channel is a pathway that connects two Centers in the Bodygraph. Each channel is formed by two Gates, one at each end. There are 36 channels in total, and together they form the circuitry of the Human Design system.

When both gates of a channel are activated in your chart, whether by your conscious (Personality) or unconscious (Design) calculations, the channel is defined. A defined channel creates a fixed, reliable energy flow between the two Centers it connects, and both of those Centers become defined (colored in) as a result. This is how definition is created in a chart.

If only one gate of a channel is activated, it is called a hanging gate. The channel remains undefined, and the energy is incomplete. Hanging gates often create an attraction to others who carry the missing gate. When two people each bring one gate of the same channel, they form an electromagnetic connection that temporarily completes the circuit between them.

Channels are grouped into circuits, families of channels that share a common theme. The three main circuit groups are Individual (mutation and empowerment), Collective (sharing through logic and experience), and Tribal (support, resources, and community). A small group of Integration channels stands apart, focused purely on personal survival and self-empowerment.

Each defined channel in your chart represents a consistent life theme, a specific energy that you can rely on and that others experience in you. Your channels are not something you do; they are something you are. Understanding them is key to understanding your definition.

| Individual Circuit Group

The Individual circuitry carries the theme of empowerment and mutation. These channels are about unique knowing, creative expression, and the acoustic frequency that transforms others without explanation. Individual energy is not here to share or support. It is here to mutate.

Individual Knowing Circuit

24-61
Channel of Awareness

The design of a thinker, inner knowing that seeks to rationalize unique insights.

23-43
Channel of Structuring

The design of individuality, translating unique knowing into concepts others can understand.

28-38
Channel of Struggle

The design of stubbornness, finding purpose and meaning through life's challenges.

20-57
Channel of the Brainwave

The design of penetrating awareness, intuitive clarity expressed spontaneously in the now.

39-55
Channel of Emoting

The design of moodiness, the emotional wave that provokes spirit and creativity.

12-22
Channel of Openness

The design of a social being, expressing emotions and feelings through creative articulation.

Centering Circuit

25-51
Channel of Initiation

The design of needing to be first, the competitive spirit that initiates others through shock.

10-34
Channel of Exploration

The design of following one's convictions, empowered behavior true to the self.

| Collective Circuit Group

The Collective circuitry carries the theme of sharing. These channels process experience and pattern for the benefit of others. The Collective has two sub-circuits: the Understanding (Logic) circuit, which projects patterns into the future, and the Sensing (Abstract) circuit, which reflects on the past to extract meaning.

Understanding (Logic) Circuit

4-63
Channel of Logic

The design of mental ease mixed with doubt, logical pressure to find answers through patterns.

17-62
Channel of Acceptance

The design of an organizational being, formulating opinions and details logically.

18-58
Channel of Judgment

The design of insatiability, the drive to correct and perfect patterns.

16-48
Channel of the Wavelength

The design of talent, depth of skill expressed through repetition and mastery.

5-15
Channel of Rhythm

The design of being in the flow, fixed life rhythms that find harmony with universal timing.

9-52
Channel of Concentration

The design of determination, focused energy and the discipline to sit still and concentrate on details.

Sensing (Abstract) Circuit

47-64
Channel of Abstraction

The design of mental activity mixed with clarity, making sense of the past through mental review.

11-56
Channel of Curiosity

The design of a searcher, stimulating ideas and stories from experience.

35-36
Channel of Transitoriness

The design of a jack of all trades, emotional desire for new experiences.

30-41
Channel of Recognition

The design of focused energy, the emotional pressure of desire and fantasy.

42-53
Channel of Maturation

The design of balanced development, cycles of beginning and completing experiences.

29-46
Channel of Discovery

The design of succeeding where others fail, committing fully to the experiential process.

| Tribal Circuit Group

The Tribal circuitry carries the theme of support and resources. These channels are about community, family, territory, and the bonds of loyalty and bargain. The Tribal has two sub-circuits: the Ego circuit, focused on willpower and material resources, and the Defense circuit, focused on nurturing and reproduction.

Ego Circuit

21-45
Channel of Money

The design of a materialist, willpower directed toward controlling resources.

37-40
Channel of Community

The design of being part of a community, the bargain of will and emotional support.

26-44
Channel of Surrender

The design of a transmitter, the ability to persuade, sell, and recognize talent.

19-49
Channel of Synthesis

The design of sensitivity, emotional awareness of needs and principles.

Defense Circuit

27-50
Channel of Preservation

The design of a custodian, nurturing and preserving values and responsibility.

6-59
Channel of Mating

The design of reproduction, emotional intimacy, and fertility.

| Integration Channels

The four Integration channels are not part of any circuit. They are the oldest channels in the Bodygraph, concerned purely with individual survival and self-empowerment. These channels connect the Spleen, Sacral, G Center, and Throat in a self-contained loop that sustains life at its most fundamental level.

34-57
Channel of Power

The design of an archetype, pure survival power expressed through intuitive response.

10-20
Channel of Awakening

The design of commitment to higher principles, being in the now through empowered behavior.

10-57
Channel of Perfected Form

The design of survival, intuitive awareness guiding behavior.

20-34
Channel of Charisma

The design of an immediate response, sacral power expressed directly through action.

| Frequently Asked Questions

What is a channel in Human Design?
A channel is a pathway that connects two Centers in the Bodygraph. Each channel is formed by two gates, one at each end. When both gates are activated in your chart, the channel is defined and creates a fixed, reliable energy flow between those two Centers. There are 36 channels in total, and they are the mechanism by which definition is created. Your defined channels represent consistent life themes and energy that you can always rely on.
What happens when only one gate of a channel is defined?
When only one gate of a channel is activated in your chart, the channel remains undefined and no energy flows between the two Centers. This single activated gate is called a hanging gate. Hanging gates create a magnetic pull toward others who carry the missing gate. When two people each bring one gate of the same channel, they complete the circuit electromagnetically. This is one of the most powerful dynamics in relationship mechanics.
What is the difference between a circuit and a channel?
A channel is a single pathway connecting two Centers. A circuit is a group of channels that share a common theme and function. The three main circuit groups are Individual (mutation and empowerment), Collective (sharing through logic and experience), and Tribal (support, resources, and community). Integration channels stand apart as they focus purely on self-empowerment and survival. Understanding which circuits your channels belong to reveals the broader themes operating in your design.
Can transits define a channel temporarily?
Yes. When a planetary transit activates a gate that completes a channel with one of your natal gates, that channel becomes temporarily defined. This transit connection can temporarily define Centers and shift how your chart is experienced in the moment. This is why you may feel different on certain days. Your natal definition remains fixed, but the transit field creates a constantly changing overlay.
How do channels relate to definition in a chart?
Channels are the mechanism that creates definition. When a channel is defined, both Centers it connects become defined (colored in on the Bodygraph). Your defined channels help create the pattern of definition in your chart, including which Centers are defined, how your definition is structured, and the fixed energy themes that operate consistently in your life. Definition is what makes you reliable. It is the energy that is always there.
