The 9 Centers

The nine Centers are the architecture of the Bodygraph. Each Center governs a specific biological function and psychological theme, and together they shape your Type, your definition, and the way you process life.

| What Are Centers?

In Human Design, the Bodygraph contains nine Centers, each corresponding to specific biological functions and psychological themes. These Centers are derived from the chakra system, but adapted to reflect the mutation that shifted humanity from the seven-centered being to the nine-centered being in 1781.

Each Center is either defined (colored in) or not-defined (white) in your Bodygraph. A white Center may be undefined or completely open. A defined Center has consistent, reliable energy; it operates the same way regardless of who is around you. An undefined or open Center takes in and amplifies the energy of others, making it a site of conditioning, sensitivity, and potential wisdom.

The pattern of definition in your chart determines your Type. Whether the Sacral is defined, whether a motor is connected to the Throat, and whether there is any definition at all - these are the mechanics behind the five Types. To understand the Centers is to understand the architecture of your energy.

Defined Centers are where your energy is fixed, consistent, and reliable. Undefined and open Centers are where you take in conditioning and develop wisdom through experience. They are not weaknesses, but areas of sensitivity. The key is learning to distinguish what is yours from what you amplify from the world around you.

| The 9 Centers

Head Center
Pineal gland · Top of the Bodygraph

The Head Center is one of two pressure centers in the Bodygraph. It creates mental pressure in the form of inspiration, questions, and the urge to think. When defined, it provides a consistent and reliable way of being inspired. When undefined, it takes in and amplifies the mental pressure of others, which can feel overwhelming. The not-self of the undefined Head tries to answer questions and resolve pressure that were never its own.

Ajna Center
Pituitary gland (anterior) · Below the Head

The Ajna Center is the center of conceptualization and mental processing. It takes the pressure and questions of the Head and turns them into concepts, opinions, and beliefs. When defined, it provides a fixed and consistent way of thinking. When undefined, it can see multiple perspectives and adapt to different ways of processing information, but the not-self seeks certainty and forms fixed opinions in order to feel mentally secure.

Throat Center
Thyroid and parathyroid · Center of the Bodygraph

The Throat Center is the hub of communication, expression, and manifestation, and the most complex Center in the Bodygraph, with eleven gates. Everything in the chart ultimately seeks expression through the Throat, because this is where energy becomes language and action. When defined, it provides a consistent voice and mode of expression. When undefined, expression shifts depending on who you are with. The not-self of the undefined Throat speaks to attract attention rather than waiting for recognition.

G Center / Self Center
Liver and blood · Below the Throat

The G Center is the center of identity, direction, and love. Also called the Self Center, it houses the Magnetic Monopole, which holds the design crystal and personality crystal together and orients you through space. When defined, it gives a fixed and reliable sense of identity and direction. When undefined, identity and direction become fluid and are shaped by environment and relationship. The not-self of the undefined G searches for love, direction, and a fixed identity rather than recognizing the wisdom in its openness.

Heart / Will / Ego Center
Heart, stomach, gallbladder, and thymus · Right of the G Center

The Heart Center, also called the Will Center or Ego Center, is a motor connected to willpower, the material plane, and self-worth. It is the smallest Center in the Bodygraph and operates in pulses, not as a constant force. When defined, it provides consistent access to willpower and the capacity to make and keep commitments. When undefined, willpower is inconsistent and easily amplified from others. The not-self of the undefined Heart tries to prove its worth, overcommits, and makes promises it cannot sustain.

Sacral Center
Ovaries and testes · Below the G Center

The Sacral Center is the most powerful motor in the Bodygraph, the center of life force, sexuality, fertility, and workforce energy. It is the defining Center for Generators and Manifesting Generators, who comprise roughly 70% of the population. When defined, it provides sustainable life-force energy that is renewed through sleep. The Sacral responds in the moment through gut response, the unmistakable "uh-huh" and "uhn-uh" that signal correct engagement. When undefined, there is no consistent access to sacral energy, and the lesson is to recognize when enough is enough. The not-self of the undefined Sacral keeps going past its limits because it is amplifying energy that is not its own.

Solar Plexus / Emotional Center
Kidneys, pancreas, and nervous system · Right side of the Bodygraph

The Solar Plexus Center is both a motor and an awareness center, the center of emotion, feeling, desire, and spirit. It operates as an emotional wave, moving through highs and lows over time. When defined, clarity does not exist in the now. It comes over time, through the wave. A defined Solar Plexus always confers emotional Authority, which means decisions should never be made in the moment. When undefined, this Center takes in and amplifies the emotional field of others, often creating heightened sensitivity to emotional atmosphere. The not-self of the undefined Solar Plexus avoids truth and confrontation in order to keep the peace.

Spleen Center
Spleen, lymphatic system, and immune function · Left side of the Bodygraph

The Spleen Center is the oldest awareness center, rooted in intuition, survival, health, and well-being. It operates in the now as spontaneous instinctive awareness that speaks once and does not repeat itself. It is associated with immunity, instinct, and existential alertness. When defined, it provides consistent intuitive awareness and a reliable sense of what is healthy and safe. When undefined, spleenic awareness is inconsistent, and there can be a tendency to hold on to people, situations, and patterns long past their time. The not-self of the undefined Spleen holds on out of fear.

Root Center
Adrenal glands · Bottom of the Bodygraph

The Root Center is both a pressure center and a motor, generating adrenaline, stress, and the pressure to evolve. Along with the Head, it creates the pressure that moves energy through the Bodygraph. When defined, it provides a consistent internal drive and a reliable way of handling stress at your own pace. When undefined, it amplifies the pressure of others, often creating an urgent need to rush and discharge stress. The not-self of the undefined Root is always trying to get rid of pressure as quickly as possible.

| Defined, Undefined and Open

Every Center in your Bodygraph exists in one of three states. Understanding these states is fundamental to knowing where your energy is reliable and where you are subject to conditioning from the world around you.

Defined Centers

A defined Center is colored in on your Bodygraph. It has at least one complete channel connecting it to another defined Center, creating a consistent and reliable flow of energy. Defined Centers are fixed in their operation. They work the same way regardless of who is around you. You radiate this energy outward and condition others with it. These are the areas where you are most consistent and self-reliable.

Undefined Centers

An undefined Center appears white on your Bodygraph but contains one or more gate activations. You do not have consistent access to this Center's energy, but the activated gates create partial, hanging connections that draw in energy from others. Undefined Centers are where you take in, amplify, and reflect the energy of defined Centers around you. Over time, they become sources of wisdom through lived experience.

Open Centers

A completely open Center is also white on your Bodygraph but has no gate activations at all. This is the deepest point of conditioning and also the deepest potential for wisdom. With no gates to filter or focus the incoming energy, an open Center takes in the full spectrum of that Center's theme. Open Centers can become profound sources of wisdom precisely because there is no fixed way of processing what moves through them.

In practice, "undefined" and "open" are often used interchangeably. The more important distinction is between defined and not-defined. If a Center is white in your chart, you are taking in and amplifying energy there, whether it is technically undefined with activations or completely open with none. The potential for wisdom remains. What differs is the depth and range of conditioning.

| Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between undefined and open centers?
An undefined Center has one or more gate activations but no complete channel, giving you a partial hook into that Center's energy. A completely open Center has no gate activations at all. Both appear white in the Bodygraph, and both take in and amplify energy from defined Centers around them. The practical difference is subtle. Open Centers have no filter for incoming energy, while undefined Centers have activated gates that color how that energy is received. In everyday discussion, the terms are often used interchangeably.
Can my centers change over time?
No. Your Bodygraph definition is set at birth and remains fixed throughout your life. However, planetary transits continuously activate gates and channels, which can temporarily define Centers on any given day. This is why your energy can feel different depending on the transit weather. Your natal definition, which forms the foundation of your design, does not change.
Is it bad to have undefined or open centers?
Not at all. Undefined and open Centers are major sources of potential wisdom. They are where you take in, amplify, and learn about energy that is not consistently your own. The challenge is not-self conditioning, which happens when you make decisions as if that amplified energy were yours. When you learn to recognize what is yours and what you are taking in, these Centers become places of sensitivity, discernment, and wisdom.
How many centers does each Type typically have defined?
It varies significantly. Generators and Manifesting Generators always have the Sacral Center defined, plus at least one other Center connected by a channel. Manifestors have a motor connected to the Throat, but no defined Sacral. Projectors have no defined Sacral and no motor-to-Throat connection, though they can have many other Centers defined. Reflectors have no defined Centers at all. Beyond these Type-defining mechanics, the number of additional defined Centers varies from person to person.
Do transits affect my centers?
Yes. The planets are constantly moving through the gates of the Bodygraph, and when a transiting gate completes a channel with one of your natal gates, it can temporarily define a Center. This is one form of transit conditioning. For Reflectors especially, who have no fixed definition, the daily transit field is the primary way definition is experienced. For all Types, understanding the transit weather can help explain temporary shifts in energy, mood, and pressure.
How do I know if I am experiencing not-self conditioning?
Not-self conditioning shows up as recurring patterns driven by your undefined or open Centers. Each open Center has characteristic not-self expressions you can watch for. For example, the Head may feel pressure to answer questions that are not yours. The Ajna may seek certainty. The Throat may speak for attention. The Heart may try to prove its worth. The key signal is making decisions from pressure, amplification, or energy that is not reliably your own. Following your Strategy and Authority is the primary antidote to not-self conditioning.
