| What Are Aspects?

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in your birth chart. When two planets are separated by a specific number of degrees, they form an aspect, a geometric connection that describes how those two planetary energies interact.

Think of aspects as conversations between planets. Some conversations are easy and supportive (trines, sextiles). Some are tense and challenging (squares, oppositions). Some are merging and intense (conjunctions). The aspects in your chart reveal the internal dynamics of your personality, where energy flows smoothly and where it creates friction.

Aspects are one of the most important components of chart interpretation. Two people can have the same Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant but have completely different lives because their aspects create different internal patterns.

| Major Aspects

Conjunction (0°)

A conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac (or very close to it). This is the most powerful aspect because the two planetary energies merge and amplify each other. The planets involved become inseparable in expression. You cannot activate one without activating the other.

A Sun-Moon conjunction creates someone whose conscious identity and emotional nature are aligned. A Mars-Saturn conjunction blends drive with discipline (or frustration with restriction, depending on the chart). Conjunctions are neither inherently positive nor negative. Their effect depends entirely on the planets involved and how they combine.

Opposition (180°)

An opposition occurs when two planets are directly across the zodiac from each other. This aspect creates awareness through polarity. You experience both energies but often swing between them or project one onto other people.

A Moon-Saturn opposition might experience the tension between emotional needs (Moon) and responsibilities or restrictions (Saturn). The key to working with oppositions is integration, finding the balance point between two valid but opposing forces rather than choosing one over the other.

Trine (120°)

A trine occurs when two planets are 120 degrees apart, usually in signs of the same element (both in Fire signs, both in Water signs, etc.). Trines represent natural talent and ease. The two planets cooperate effortlessly.

A Venus-Jupiter trine creates a natural generosity and social grace. A Mars-Pluto trine gives access to deep reserves of power and determination without the destructive intensity that harder Mars-Pluto aspects can produce. The caution with trines is that their ease can become complacency. Gifts that come too easily may go undeveloped.

Square (90°)

A square occurs when two planets are 90 degrees apart. This is the classic tension aspect. The two planets are in conflict, creating friction, frustration, and the pressure to act. Squares are often where the most growth happens because they will not let you rest.

A Mercury-Mars square creates a sharp, argumentative mind that can also be brilliantly incisive. A Venus-Pluto square creates intense, transformative relationships that may involve power struggles. Squares demand effort, but the effort builds strength.

Sextile (60°)

A sextile occurs when two planets are 60 degrees apart, usually in compatible elements (Fire-Air or Earth-Water). Sextiles represent opportunities. The planets can work together, but you need to activate them through conscious effort. Unlike trines, which flow automatically, sextiles require you to take action.

A Mercury-Venus sextile gives the potential for eloquent, charming communication, but you need to develop it. A Mars-Jupiter sextile offers opportunities for bold, expansive action, but you need to seize them.

Key Insight

Aspects are one of the most important components of chart interpretation. Two people can have the same Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant but have completely different lives because their aspects create different internal patterns.

| Minor Aspects

Semi-Sextile (30°)

The semi-sextile connects planets in adjacent signs. Because adjacent signs share nothing in common (different element, different modality, different polarity), this aspect creates a subtle sense of discomfort or adjustment. The two planets are aware of each other but speak different languages. Working with semi-sextiles requires conscious adaptation and can produce creative solutions born from the friction between incompatible energies.

Semi-Square (45°)

The semi-square is a minor tension aspect, a weaker version of the square. It creates irritation, restlessness, and low-level friction that can be productive when channeled consciously but annoying when ignored. Semi-squares often manifest as recurring minor frustrations that eventually push you toward change.

Sesquiquadrate (135°)

Also called the sesquisquare, this aspect is 135 degrees (a square plus a semi-square). Like the semi-square, it produces tension and agitation, but at a slightly higher level of intensity. Sesquiquadrates often point to issues that build up over time and eventually demand resolution.

Quintile (72°)

The quintile divides the circle into five equal parts and is associated with creativity, talent, and unique gifts. Quintiles point to abilities that set you apart, things you can do that feel natural and distinctive. They are particularly relevant in the charts of artists, innovators, and anyone whose work involves creative problem-solving.

Bi-Quintile (144°)

The bi-quintile is two quintiles and carries similar creative energy. It often indicates a refined or more developed form of the quintile's gift, a talent that expresses through mastery rather than raw inspiration.

Inconjunct / Quincunx (150°)

The inconjunct (also called the quincunx) connects planets that have absolutely nothing in common: different element, different modality, different polarity. This creates a persistent sense that something needs adjusting but you cannot quite figure out what. Inconjuncts often manifest as health issues, chronic life adjustments, or situations where two important parts of your life refuse to integrate smoothly.

The inconjunct is sometimes called the "aspect of adjustment" because it demands constant fine-tuning. It is also a key component of the Yod pattern (also known as the "Finger of God"), which occurs when two planets both form inconjuncts to a third planet while sextiling each other.

| Understanding Orbs

An orb is the range of degrees within which an aspect is considered active. No two planets need to be at the exact angle to form an aspect. There is a margin of tolerance.

For example, a trine is exact at 120 degrees. With an orb of 8 degrees, any two planets between 112 and 128 degrees apart would still be considered in a trine relationship. The closer to exact the aspect is, the stronger its effect. An aspect at 0 degrees of orb (exact) is more powerful than one at 7 degrees.

Different astrologers use different orbs. Common ranges include tight orbs (3-5 degrees for major aspects, 1-2 degrees for minor aspects) used by traditional and Vedic astrologers, medium orbs (6-8 degrees for major aspects, 2-3 for minor) used by most modern Western astrologers, and wide orbs (10-12 degrees for major aspects, especially for the Sun and Moon) used by some psychological astrologers. Genetic Matrix Pro members get a dedicated Astro HD ORB Aspects settings panel where you can set your own custom orb value (in degrees) for every single aspect type. The defaults are generous: 10.00 degrees for Conjunction, Opposition, Trine, and Square; 8.00 for Sextile; 6.00 for Semi-Sextile and Semi-Square; 5.00 for Inconjunct; 4.00 for Quintile, Bi-Quintile, and Sesquiquadrate. You can tighten or widen any of these to match your preferred astrological tradition.

| Turning Aspects On and Off

Not every astrologer works with every aspect. Some practitioners focus exclusively on the major aspects (Conjunction, Opposition, Trine, Square, Sextile) and ignore the minor ones. Others want the full picture including Quintiles and Sesquiquadrates.

Genetic Matrix Pro members have an Astro HD Aspects settings panel with individual on/off toggles for each of the 11 supported aspects. This means you can customize your chart to show only the aspects relevant to your practice. If you only care about major aspects, switch off the minors. If you want the full detailed picture, leave them all on.

| Hybrid Calculation: Best of Both Worlds

Genetic Matrix offers a feature that is unique in the world of astrology and Human Design software: Hybrid Calculation. When you select a sidereal astrology system, you have the option to enable Hybrid mode. This uses the sidereal zodiac for all astrological placements (planet signs, house cusps, aspects) while preserving the tropical-derived Human Design elements calculated using Ra Uru Hu's original method.

Why does this matter? Human Design was developed using tropical calculations. If you switch to sidereal astrology, you might want your zodiac positions to reflect the actual starfield, but you might also want to keep your Human Design Bodygraph, type, profile, and channels exactly as Ra defined them. Hybrid mode gives you this: sidereal astrology with tropical Human Design, so you get the best of both systems without compromise. This is available exclusively to Genetic Matrix Pro members and is not offered by any other platform.

Key Insight

Genetic Matrix's Hybrid Calculation is unique in the world of astrology software. It lets you use sidereal zodiac positions for astrology while preserving the tropical-based Human Design calculations from Ra Uru Hu's original system.

| Aspect Patterns

When multiple aspects connect to form geometric shapes in the chart, they create aspect patterns, configurations that describe more complex dynamics.

Grand Trine: Three planets each 120 degrees apart, forming an equilateral triangle. Usually all in the same element. Represents a circuit of flowing, harmonious energy that can be a great gift or a comfort zone that resists growth.

T-Square: Two planets in opposition with a third planet squaring both, forming a T-shape. Creates dynamic tension focused on the planet at the apex. Highly motivating but can feel like constant pressure.

Grand Cross: Four planets forming two oppositions and four squares, creating a cross or square shape. Extremely dynamic and challenging, with tension pulling in four directions simultaneously. Can produce remarkable achievement through the sheer pressure to act.

Yod (Finger of God): Two planets in sextile, both forming inconjuncts to a third planet. Creates a sense of fated or compulsive energy directed at the apex planet. Often associated with a special mission or recurring life theme that demands adjustment.

Kite: A grand trine with a fourth planet opposing one of the trine planets and sextiling the other two. Adds focus and direction to the grand trine's flowing energy, turning passive talent into active achievement.

Stellium: Three or more planets conjunct in the same sign or house. Concentrates enormous energy in one area of life, making it a dominant theme.

| True Astrology: Aspects in Human Design

Genetic Matrix offers a unique feature called True Astrology for Pro members. In standard astrology, an aspect is considered active as long as the two planets are within orb. True Astrology adds an additional requirement rooted in Human Design principles: for an aspect to be "complete," all legs of the aspect must connect through defined centers in your Human Design Bodygraph.

This means an aspect between two planets is only fully expressed if the gates and channels they activate create a continuous defined connection through your Bodygraph. If one leg passes through an open (undefined) center, the aspect is present but experienced as conditioning rather than as a consistent, reliable part of your nature. This integration of astrology and Human Design adds a layer of nuance that no other platform offers. It helps explain why some people feel their chart aspects strongly while others barely notice them. The answer may lie in whether those aspects are "completed" through their Bodygraph definition.

| Frequently Asked Questions

Which aspects are the strongest?
Conjunctions, oppositions, and squares are the most powerful aspects. Trines and sextiles are significant but more subtle. Minor aspects (semi-sextile, quintile, etc.) add detail and nuance.
Are squares and oppositions bad?
No. They are challenging, but challenge drives growth. Many of the most accomplished people in history have charts dominated by squares and oppositions. These aspects create the tension and motivation needed for significant achievement.
Can I set my own orbs on Genetic Matrix?
Yes. Genetic Matrix Pro members get a dedicated ORB Aspects settings panel where you can set custom orb values (in degrees) for each of the 11 aspect types individually.
Can I turn off aspects I do not use?
Yes. Pro members have individual on/off toggles for each aspect type. You can customize your chart to show only the aspects relevant to your astrological practice.
What is Hybrid Calculation?
Hybrid is a Genetic Matrix exclusive feature that lets you use sidereal zodiac positions for astrology while preserving the tropical-based Human Design calculations from Ra Uru Hu's original system. This gives you sidereal astrology and tropical Human Design in a single chart, the best of both worlds.
What is True Astrology?
True Astrology is a Genetic Matrix Pro feature that evaluates astrology aspects through the lens of Human Design. An aspect is considered complete only if the planetary connections also create defined channels through your Human Design Bodygraph. This provides a deeper understanding of which aspects are consistently active in your life versus those experienced as conditioning.
What aspects does Genetic Matrix support?
Genetic Matrix supports 11 aspect types: Conjunction, Opposition, Trine, Square, Sextile, Semi-Sextile, Semi-Square, Sesquiquadrate, Quintile, Bi-Quintile, and Inconjunct (Quincunx).
